- School, now fire and emergency services depot. C1845
Graham Carter
- actually opened in 1911 and closed with the closure of the rest of the (former GWR) BR Works in 1986. It occupied a building that was built in 1882 and housed the road wagon (later motor wagon) shop (1882-c1910) before becoming a fire station. The fire station had four small offices, a 'mess room' where uniforms and helmets were stored, and there was a large workshop attached, which serviced fire extinguishers and other fire prevention/fighting equipment. The fire station yard had a hose testing trough (now lost) and a hose drying tower (which still exists, having been restored in 2014). The fire station was beautifully restored in 2014 and converted into a workshop and classroom for the Swindon UTC (University Technical College). |
